안녕하세요. 오늘은 Chocolate Fever에서 세가지 표현을 살펴보겠습니다. 첫번째와 두번째는 bite (yell) one’s head off 이고, 세번째로는 as cool as cantaloupe 입니다.
bite (yell) one’s head off
첫번째 표현은 다소 폭력적인 장면이 연상됩니다. 어떤 사람의 머리를 물어서 뽑아버리겠다는 뜻이 아닌가 싶죠. 이 표현은 ‘남의 말에 마구 대들다’ 라는 뜻입니다. 머리를 뽑아버릴 것처럼 들이댄다는 뜻입니다. 이 표현은 책에서 21 페이지에 등장합니다. 이날 무엇인가 이상한 느낌이 드는 Henry는 반으로 들어가는 줄에 조용히 서있었죠. 그러자 가장 친한 친구인 Michael이 무슨일 있냐고 물어봅니다.

“OK, OK,” said Michael. “You don’t have to bite my head off. It’s just that you’re kind of different today. Not like you at all.”“그게 무슨말이야? 뭐가 문제냐니?” Henry 가 말했다. “나는 그냥 여기 서있으면 안돼? 내가 무례하게 행동하고 미치광이 처럼 행동해야해?”

흔히 쓰이는 표현은 cantaloupe 대신에 오이인 cucumber를 사용한 것입니다. as cool as a cucumber 는 아주 침착하게라는 뜻으로 쓰이고 멜론을 뜻하는 cantaloupe 를 써도 같은 뜻입니다. 이 표현은 Henry가 양호실로 데려갔을때 갈색 반점으로 온몸이 뒤덮혀 있는 것을 발견했을 때 나옵니다.

All he could recall was that both he and Mrs. Kimmelfarber were yelling their heads off. And that Nurse Molly Farthing was as cool as a cantaloupe.
몇년후에 Henry는 누가 먼저 소리를 질렀는지 기억하지 못했다. 그가 생각해낸 것은 그와 Kimmelfarber 선생님 둘다 목청껏 소리를 지르고 있었다는 것이다. 그리고 그 양호선생님 Molly Farthing은 매우 침착했다.
