안녕하세요. 오늘은 My Father’s Dragon에서 두가지 표현 get hold of 와 get to the bottom of 을 알아보겠습니다.

get hold of

get hold of 는 ‘~을 파악하다’, ‘~발견하다, 찾아내다’의 의미를 가집니다. 이 표현은 page 44에서 두마리의 멧돼지가 이상한 일이 일어나고 있다고 말하면서 무슨일인지 알아내야 한다고 말하는 부분입니다.

“Tell me, Rhinoceros,” he said, “where did you get that fine tube of tooth paste and that toothbrush?”
“Too busy!” said the rhinoceros, and he went on brushing as hard as he could.
The boar sniffed angrily and trotted down the trail toward the dragon, muttering to himself,
“Very suspicious – tigers too busy chewing gum, Rhinoceros too busy brushing his tusk – must get hold of that invasion.”
“말해봐, 코뿔소야.” 그가 말했다. “어디서 그 좋은 치약 하나와 그 칫솔을 얻었지?”
“너무 바빠!” 코뿔소가 말했다. 그리고 그가 할수 있는 만큼 열심히 칫솔질을 계속했다.
멧돼지는 화가나서 킁킁거렸고 길을 따라서 용에게로 빨리 걸어가면서 중얼거렸다.
“아주 의심스러워, 호랑이들은 껌을 씹느라고 너무 바쁘고, 코뿔소는 그의 뿔을 칫솔질하느라고 너무 바빠. 그 침입에 대해서 찾아내야만해. “

get to the bottom of

get to the bottom of 의 의미는 ‘~을 철저하게 조사하다’입니다. 맨 밑바닥까지 내려가 보겠다는 것이죠. 이 책에서는 page 52에서 호랑이들이 너무 바빠서 말도 걸지 않는다고 멧돼지들이 말하는 부분입니다.

“They’ll talk to me!
I’m going to get to the bottom of this if it’s the last thing I do.”
The voices passed my father and went around a curve, and he hurried on because he knew how much more upset the boars would be when they saw the lion’s mane tied up in hair ribbons.
“그들은 나한테 말할 거야!
